Production Mode

I just got home from a 15 hour day in the shop. A little better than 100 pairs finished in the last few days, and another 100+ to go in the next few days. Then I fly back East to pick skis, and continue on to Norway and Finland for World Cups. I’ll be ready for a bit of sanity when I get back here on Dec 3rd.

Bed Time.

Do you take your stone grinding equipment? If so, how much does it weigh? How many times can you grind a ski in its (the ski’s) life time? How long does a grinding last for a competitive skier?

No. About 1200 lbs ( I told you that even though I’m not taking it). Number of grinds depends on how much material needs to be taken off. If the ski is well cared for between grinds and its just a question of putting a new pattern on, then about 40 times. If the ski needs extensive work (which means material removal) then that number goes way, way down. Sometimes only 3 or 4 grinds will get you through the base if the ski is in bad shape. A grind can be destroyed quickly by added hand structure or extreme conditions and waxes. However, with care a grind can last quite a long time. I’ve seen national-level racers on three and four year old grinds with good results. At the World Cup level most skis get reground after four or five races.
